Hovannisian Chair in Modern Armenian History at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn; Woodbury University, Burbank, CA and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research, Belmont, MA.
Venue: Woodbury University , Burbank , CA
Date : Saturday, October 27, 2012
An academic conference will be held to mark the 125th anniversary of the Social-Democratic Hunchakian Party. A number of established scholars in the United States have already committed themselves to participate in and present papers at this gathering. However, the co-sponsors and organizers are issuing this call for papers, in anticipation of additional submissions, not only from the United States, but also from around the world. They are interested in topics such as the role of Hunchakian women and their contribution to society; the public and political party activities of famous intellectuals, who were members of the Hunchakian Party; and particularly in topics on the post-1915 Diasporan history of the party, including the impact on the party of the Great Repatriation to Soviet Armenia in 1946-1949; and the party’s attempts to re-establish roots in the Republic of Armenia since independence in 1991. The co-sponsors hope that this conference will thus break some new ground in study of the political, intellectual and social history of the Armenian people from the end of the nineteenth century to the present.
Scholars who are interested in presenting papers at the conference, either in English or in Armenian, are requested to submit a one-page proposal by August 15, 2012 to the following e-mail address: info@sdhp125.org. The proposal should include the title of the paper, a 300-word abstract, a brief biography/institutional affiliation of the author(s), and contact details. Presenting samples of the author’s previously published work as part of the submission package is encouraged, but not mandatory.
All proposals will be peer reviewed by an ad hoc committee of experts in the field. The authors, whose abstracts are accepted, will be notified by e-mail by August 31, 2012.
Presentations at the conference should be a maximum of 20 minutes.
The conference organizers have limited funds to assist some participants with travel expenses. Hence, they urge all presenters to apply for institutional or organizational support. Those who have no opportunities to obtain outside assistance should submit to the organizers a request for travel assistance along with their proposal. Accommodation for all participants in the Los Angeles area for the duration of the conference will be covered by the organizers.
