The Free University of Bozen/Bolzano was founded in 1997 as a multilingual, internationally oriented institution. It is a non-state funded university, granted the authority to award university degrees by the Italian state. The university promotes the free exchange of ideas and scientific knowledge, linking itself to the European humanities tradition and laying the  foundations for its society by promoting respect for democratic principles. Its international orientation is further emphasized by its commitment to multilingualism and its international academic staff and student body.
The Free University of Bozen/Bolzano champions research at the highest of levels, is committed to excellence and the advancement of knowledge through critical and independent scholarship and values freedom to push the frontiers of knowledge forward. Research projects which are interdisciplinary, international or which have local relevance are particularly encouraged. In this respect, the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano endorses research, and is especially committed to promoting young researchers.

A public competition for the allocation of PhD-positions in Sustainable Energy and Technologies is announced, for
  • 7 places, of which 4 places will be covered by grants.
This PhD Research Programme lasts three years during which the PhD students will actively attend the teaching and scientific activities. The final thesis must be completed in English and must have a complete abstract in German and Italian. PhD students should therefore benefit from the special multilingual opportunities that the University offers, which include various events in Italian, German or other languages (seminars, optional courses, social events, etc). The PhD programme comprises lectures and research activities that can be attended at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano and at universities abroad.
