Lost in Commemoration: The Armenian Genocide in Memory & Identity

Dr. Ugur Ümit Üngör

Start: May 2, 2013 6:30 pm; 40 Marshal Baghramyan Ave, AUA, Yerevan, Armenia

The memory of the Armenian Genocide in Turkish identity will be the topic of this year’s annual commemorative lecture on the Armenian Genocide at the American University of Armenia (AUA).

Dr. Ugur Ümit Üngör, the director of Graduate Studies at the Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, will explore the topic in a live webcast from the Netherlands to be broadcast at AUA on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 PM (Yerevan Time). The lecture will be broadcast live online here. A reception in the Akian Art Gallery will follow the lecture.

Dr. Üngör holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam and is an Assistant Professor at the Department of History of Utrecht University focusing on mass violence and ethnic conflict.

“The Turkish state’s official policy towards the Armenian Genocide was and is indeed characterized by the “three M’s”: misrepresentation, mystification, and manipulation,” explains Dr. Üngör. “But when one gauges what place the genocide occupies in the social memory of Turkish society, a different picture emerges.”

Dr. Üngör’s talk will explore the clash between official state memory and popular social memory. “The Turkish government is denying a genocide that its own population remembers,” says Dr. Üngör. “Even after nearly a century, as most direct eyewitnesses to the crime have passed away, elderly Turks and Kurds in eastern Turkey often hold vivid memories on the genocide.”

His most recent publication, Confiscation and Destruction: The Young Turk Seizure of Armenian Property, is a detailed accounting of all the property seized from Armenians during the Genocide to create the modern state of Turkey. Dr. Üngör is also the author of the award-winning book The Making of Modern Turkey: Nation and State in Eastern Anatolia, 1913-1950, which examines the process of social engineering, mass violence and genocide the Young Turks and their Republican successors utilized as they tried to create a homogeneous Turkey. He is currently working on a book on paramilitaries in comparative perspective.

Armenia is in transition from Soviet socialism to liberal democratic capitalism. After more than 20 years of independence, one of the important issues for the success of this transition remains the issue of Armenia’s Soviet legacy. There are different opinions among the social groups of the Republic of Armenia concerning this legacy. Some people consider the Soviet era as a positive turn for the Armenian nation. But during the last 5 years, especially after the presidential election of 2008 and the subsequent violent crackdown of March 1st, public opinion has changed significantly. There is a new assumption that the sovietization of Armenia could have halted the development of capitalism in the Republic of Armenia. Moreover, one of the widely debated themes in Armenia is the problem of Russian colonialism and its consequences. Today, Soviet totalitarianism and the sovietization of Armenia are viewed as an advancement of Russian colonialism. One of the suggested ways for overcoming the post-Soviet legacy of Russian colonialism is the formation of postcolonial discourse in Armenian civil society. This approach will assist various social groups in a reevaluation of the old approaches and to find new ways of transition and development.

Aghasi Tadevosyan was born in 1966 in Armenia. He graduated from the Department of History of Yerevan State University in 1991. In 1995, he obtained a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology. His main research interests are social changes, cultural transition, value transformation, modernization, and migration processes of post-Soviet Armenia. He has authored or co-authored 11 monographs and more than 40 scientific articles published in the Armenian, English and Russian languages. He is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of the Republic of Armenia, an Associate Professor at Yerevan State University, and currently a Visiting Fulbright Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley.

A lecture by Murat Cankara

In recent decades there has been a renewed scholarly interest on literature produced by Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in a hybrid language known as “Armeno-Turkish” or Ottoman Turkish written in Armenian letters. Some of this scholarship has claimed the literary corpus of printed works in this language, ranging from novels to newspapers, as primarily belonging to Armenian national history while others have claimed it as part of the Turkish national tradition.

Murat Cankara’s talk will provide a critical overview of the history and place ofArmeno-Turkish literature in both Ottoman history and historiography. Cankara will show how and why Armeno-Turkish, especially throughout the nineteenth century, was not merely an Armenian or Turkish phenomenon but rather a cultural reflection ofa larger Ottoman history. By presenting examples of Turkish statesmen, authors, and journalists who were either aware of or could read Armeno- Turkish, Cankara will explore how Armeno-Turkish might have served as a written lingua franca among the members of different ethnic, religious, and linguistic groups in the Ottoman Empire. His talk will thus contribute to the debate over the Ottoman millet system from the perspective of cross-cultural exchanges and encounters among the different peoples of the Ottoman empire.

Historical Shirvan, Arran, and Azerbaijan constitute an important contact zone, one of the marked areas of the South Caspian region, having concatenated the Iranian and Caucasian worlds. A multi-ethnic region with its archaic heritage and interpenetrating cultural traditions, has always preserved its geopolitical significance. It is obvious that a number of present-day problems are the results of contradictions of the past and in no way connected with the historical oppositions of autochthonous traditional cultures. An objective retrospective outlook over the history of the region, analysis of its prosperous eras and periods of peaceful coexistence of various ethnic and religious groups, could promote an intercultural dialogue and development of integration strategy.

Scholars and postgraduate students are invited to submit papers and panel proposals related to all aspects of history of the region, culture, linguistics, literature, religion, archaeology, as well as current political issues.

The Conference will be held on November 1-2, 2013, in Yerevan, Armenia.
The working languages of the Conference are English and Russian.

Abstracts (not exceeding 500 words) are to be emailed by July 15, 2013 to:

Dr. Khachik Gevorgian Khachik.gevorgyan@yahoo.co.uk

A brief CV, including contact details is to be included in the message.

A notification about acceptance of the abstracts will be sent by Aug 15, 2013.

The scheduled time for each paper is 15 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion.

The organizers will most probably offer a limited number of grants for participants from the Caucasian region, but will not be able to provide financial assistance to cover travel and accommodation costs for all those whose abstracts are accepted. Participants will receive an official letter of invitation upon request.

You will be informed about further details – conference venue and near-by hotels, registration fee, cultural programme, meals, etc. – in the 2nd circular letter, after the acceptance notification.

Book Exhibition
Publishers and individuals are invited to present their books during the days of the conference. A special place in the conference building will be provided for this exhibition. For more information please contact the organizers.
